JUST A MOMENT: WHAT ABOUT THOSE APPLES
There’s an old phrase that has always made me smile: “How do you like them apples?”
It’s usually said with a little swagger. A little attitude. As if someone has just pulled off something unexpected and wants the world to take notice.
But I’ve been thinking about apples lately, and I wonder if there’s another lesson hiding in that old expression.
Maybe it’s not always about proving something to somebody else. Maybe it’s about learning to appreciate what’s right in front of us.
An apple doesn’t try to be an orange. It doesn’t apologize for being an apple. It simply grows, ripens, and becomes what it was meant to be.
And maybe that’s a pretty good lesson for the rest of us.
We spend so much time comparing ourselves to other people. Their accomplishments. Their happiness. Their lives. We look at what they have and wonder whether we measure up.
Meanwhile, we forget to appreciate the good things growing in our own lives.
The small kindness. The unexpected laugh. The friend who checks in. The ordinary Wednesday that turns out to be a pretty good day after all.
So maybe today, instead of asking how we measure up to somebody else, we ought to take a look at our own lives and ask a different question.
What about them apples?
The ones growing right in your own backyard. The blessings you sometimes overlook. The goodness that might not look like much to anyone else but means the world to you.
They may not be perfect. They may have a bruise or two.
But then again, so do most of us.
And there’s still plenty of good left in us.
Just a thought for your Wednesday.
What’s one good thing growing in your life right now that deserves a little more appreciation?
