FRINGESHIP

I came across a word this week that made me stop and think.

F R I N G E S H I P

I had never heard it before, but I immediately knew exactly what it meant.

You know those people who aren’t quite your friends—but aren’t really strangers either?

The person you see on your morning walk.
The person at the coffee shop who knows your order.
The person you bump into at work or somewhere else in your regular routine.

You may not know much about their life.

You may never call them when things fall apart.

But when you see them, you smile.

You talk.

You laugh.

And somehow, seeing them makes an ordinary day a little better.

That’s a FRINGESHIP.

And the older I get, the more I think these relationships matter.

Our circles sometimes get smaller. Time and energy become more precious. We don’t always have the capacity to turn every connection into a deep friendship.

But we still need people.

Sometimes we simply need someone who knows our name.

Someone who asks how we’re doing.

Someone whose face makes us smile when we walk through the door.

They may live on the fringes of our lives.

But that doesn’t mean they aren’t part of what makes our lives richer.

So today, notice the people on your fringes.

Smile at them.

Say hello.

Ask how they’re doing.

Because caring doesn’t always require a deep relationship.

Sometimes caring is simply noticing that someone is there—and being glad they are.

And maybe that’s enough to make both of your days a little better.
