WHAT IF’ING

Have you ever noticed how two little words can take over your entire day?

WHAT IF?

What if things go wrong?
What if they don’t like me?
What if that test result is bad?
What if I made the wrong decision?
What if tomorrow is worse than today?

Before long, one little worry has become a full-blown disaster movie playing in our heads. And we’re not just watching it. We’re living it!

There’s actually a name for this: CATASTROPHIZING
It’s our mind’s habit of jumping to the worst possible outcome and treating it as though it’s already happened.

Here’s the irony: We spend so much time worrying about what might happen that we miss what’s happening right now.

So here’s a little challenge.

The next time you catch yourself spiraling into What if?, try changing the question.

Instead of asking, “What if everything goes wrong?” ask, “What if things actually turn out okay?”

Step outside. Take a breath. Call a friend. Write down what’s bothering you. Remember what matters most. And give yourself permission to imagine a future that isn’t filled with trouble.

Because worrying about tomorrow doesn’t make tomorrow any easier. It just steals a little more of today.

This Friday’s Caring Catalyst challenge:
Catch yourself the next time those two little words show up. Don’t let an imagined worst-case scenario rob you of a real-life opportunity to experience something good.

After all, WHAT IF the very thing you’re worrying about never happens?

And WHAT IF something wonderful does?

Now, that’s a what-if worth entertaining!
