AT THIS TABLE

There is something beautiful about a table.

A table says, Come sit down.

It says, You belong here.

And perhaps most importantly, it says, There is room for you.

That is the heart of Idina Menzel and SeLah’s beautiful song, “At This Table.” It reminds us that the people around us don’t need to look like us, think like us, or agree with us to deserve a place at the table.

What if that became our invitation this week?

Not, “Do you agree with me?”

But, “Can you sit with me?”

Not, “What can you contribute?”

But, “How can I make room for you?”

Jesus was remarkably good at setting tables. He ate with people others avoided. He welcomed people others judged. He made room.

Maybe that’s what caring looks like at its simplest:

Making room.
Listening.
Welcoming.
Leaving a chair open.

Someone around you may be wondering this week whether there is still a place for them.

Pull up a chair.

There is always room at the table.
