JUST A MOMENT: BEHIND THE MASK
It’s Halloween week! The ghosts are glowing, the skeletons are shaking, and somewhere in the neighborhood, a Pirates of the Caribbean yard decoration is bringing the dead back to life. Arrrgh!
It’s fun to be frightened when we know it’s pretend.
But what about the things that frighten us when there’s no costume, no spooky soundtrack, and no pirate waving a sword?
There’s a familiar acronym for F.E.A.R.: False Experiences Appearing Real.
Think about that for a moment.
How much of what we fear is actually happening—and how much lives in the stories we tell ourselves?
What if I fail? What if they reject me? What if the worst happens? What if I’m not enough?
Sometimes, the mask we wear hides our fear from others. Other times, the mask hides the truth from ourselves.
Halloween offers us a curious opportunity. Beneath all the frightening faces, perhaps we can uncover something a little more hallowed.
What if we took off a mask or two? What if we honestly named the fear we’ve been carrying? What if we looked a little closer before assuming the monster in the shadows was real?
That doesn’t mean every fear is imaginary. Some fears deserve our attention, and some situations require courage, help, or a change of direction.
But not every frightening thought deserves to become our reality.
Your Caring Catalyst challenge this Wednesday:
Before Halloween is over, name one fear you’ve been carrying. Ask yourself: Is this happening, or am I imagining what might happen?
Then take one small step toward facing it—with honesty, courage, or the help of someone you trust.
Because sometimes, the scariest thing in the yard isn’t the pirate.
It’s the story we’ve convinced ourselves is true.
Unmask the fear. Find the real story. And be a little kinder to yourself and someone else along the way.
That’s how we turn Halloween into a little more hallowed ground.
